Eco-Friendly Christmas Gifts

I try to think of the environment with all that I do, and Christmas gift giving is no exception. I was thrilled to meet a couple at a farmer's market that makes handmade beeswax candles with all natural and local ingredients. Local bees produce the beeswax and they are scented with handcrafted essential oils which are also locally produced from locally grown items, such as lavender and scotch pine.

I found the candle holder you see in the picture above at a thrift store for 25 cents. It is in perfect shape; you would never even know it was used. The most efficient form of recycling involves reusing things in the same form. It is much more eco-friendly to do this rather than tossing something into a recycling bin to be intensively processed into a raw material which is then reshaped into a new item. Buying used items in their original form is definitely the better form of recycling.

I always buy lots of gifts at thrift stores and I encourage you to do the same. You will find more unique items than you get at your local big box discount chain store. The proceeds from a thrift store go directly to charities, rather than some big corporation.
